The Boys will take place on Tuesday March 18th from 1pm to 4pm and the girls will follow on Wednesday the 19thm from 9am till 1pm. As many as one hundred and sixty boys and girls will participate in the inter house competitions this week. Grade 12 boys are scheduled to play their inter house tournament in April after the Easter break

Several hundred girls from John Gray are expected at the South Sound pitch over the next several weeks along with Students from Montessori and Red Bay for their in school coaching sessions and inter house matches as part of the Greenlight Re school Rugby program. It is expected that these sessions will help recruit new players into the blossoming Cayman Women's programs for the upcoming ten's league and also the two Championships in May and October 2008 that the Cayman National Women's team will be participating in. This marks the third year that the Girls from John Gray have played Rugby as part of their school curriculem and much like the boys their rugby is fast, free flowing and exciting to watch.

Press Release – Greenlight Re Sponsors Inter-Schools Rugby Program

Greenlight Reinsurance, Ltd. a locally based specialty property and casualty reinsurer will donate CI$15,000 annually to the Cayman Junior Rugby Development Fund as part of a three year sponsorship of the inter-schools rugby program. The funds will enable the Cayman Rugby Football Club to deliver in school rugby coaching to over fourteen schools.

Greenlight Re’s Chief Financial Officer, Tim Courtis, stated,” We at Greenlight Re are delighted to be part of such an exciting program which offers rugby instruction to such a large and diverse group of school children. We hope our support fosters a love for the game of rugby and a development of young players.”

The program which is supported by the Cayman Islands Government includes in school instruction as well as inter house and inter-school tournament play. Richard Adams, Technical Director and National Coach of the Cayman Rugby Union said, “The in school development program is essential in order to introduce all school aged children to the sport of Rugby and the life time of opportunity it can offer them as an elite athlete, social player but perhaps more importantly as a good well balanced citizen and community leader. We are delighted that Greenlight Reinsurance, Ltd shares our vision and program goals for the youth of the country and more importantly allows us to deliver our vision through direct funding. I am sure that over the next three year term we will be writing about school players who have gone on to play national level sport as well as school players who go on to be community leaders through coaching, refereeing and admininistering community Rugby and sport programs.”

The inter-school rugby program has increased significantly since the programs inception in 2002. The program is delivered to over 2,500 children each year. Further information on the inter-school program and all rugby activities can be found on the clubs website at www.caymanrugby.com

The St Ignatius and Cayman Prep grades 8 through 12 met on the South Sound pitch on Monday afternoon in the rain to decide the Greenlight Re Christmas inter school tournament. Over eighty boys played in fifteen matches to decide which school would take the honors. Fantastic hands, agility and speed were on show as well as some huge tackles from all of the age groups showing just how far the skill levels of the players has grown over the past few years of the schools program. The matches consisted of the sevens and tens format of the game and were highly entertaining. St Ignatius ran out the final winners in the day 21 points to 12 with individual grades being decided as follows

  • Grade 8 Tied 4 points each
  • Grade 9 Tied 4 points each
  • Grade 10 St Ignatius 6 points to Prep 3
  • Grade 11 Tied 1 point each
  • Grade 12 St Ignatius 6 points to Prep 0

With the development of school based rugby in the Cayman Islands over the past six years there has become a necessity for inter school competition to give the young players a chance to test themselves against their peers. Greenlight RE who are dedicated to youth development and community recreation have stepped forward and sponsored, in school coaching sessions from professional rugby coaches, a series of inter school tournaments as well as inter house tournaments for our school based players.

The tournaments showcase the best of the young school players from ages as young as seven through to sixteen. With as many as three thousand children participating in the fifteen school programs offered some five hundred are selected to represent their schools in the Greenlight RE inter school tournaments.

The Greenlight Re tournaments also allow the Academy selectors to identify and approach players who show the potential to become part of the Maples National Sevens Academy or the XV’s Academy which is invaluable.
