DHL STORM SEAL HISTORIC DOUBLE

With rain clouds looming at the Cayman Rugby Club the finals day started early Saturday morning with the IRG/Knight Frank Challenge and built to a massive crescendo with the Waterford Trophy Final between the DHL Storm and the BPC Buccaneers.

Thankfully the predicted heavy downfalls never materialised and the South Sound pitch was in good shape for a days Rugby. With the meat on the grill and the beer chilled and non stop rugby who could have asked for anything more!

As the day drew on and the Touch Finals were decided with Midas Touch defaeting Touch & Go in the Ladies Top Drawer series and Flour beating surprise package Maples and Calder in the Ogier Winter touch series, Maples having upset favourites Random Touchers whose star players were all missing at the crucial hour.

The moment all had been waiting for came at 5:30 when the DHL Storm took the field against the BPC Buccaneers. The Storm were looking for their 2nd trophy of the season and the Buccaneers, who had beaten the powerful Don Fosters Dive Iguanas only 2 days earlier in a hard fought battle which decended into a penalty fest were looking to upset the Storm, who were not only chasing a history making Double... but had won their first trophy in their 5 year history.

Rugby Club Technical Director Richard “Grizz” Adams reminisced “When we first started the Storm team we used to think a loss by less that 50 points was a pretty good score... now look at the team... we’re favourites to win 2 trophies!”

From the kick off the game was played at a feverish pace and all eyes were on Storm Captain Keswick Wright with the spectators wondering if Wright could reach his target of 30 tries for the season, a feat which would require 8 tries in this game alone!

Even more surprising was to see Stephen “Bluey” Hannon back on the pitch having made a miraculous recovery from his neck injury which required hospital attention only 4 days earlier.

Both teams exchanged blows for the opening minutes and neither side could really find the space for long runs but the crowds were none the less entertained with bullish runs from Storm Flanker and centre Andre Ormond and Barnaby Richardson and Buccaneer Prop Ben McDonald.

The crowd were finally treated to points being scored when Storm winger Phil O’Connor broke the deadlock with one of his trademark pumping leg runs which resulted in 3 broken tackles and a try in corner.

The game continued with the Storm seeming to dominate in the first half thanks to Bluey Hannon who kept the Buccs in out of contention with some clever kicking and although the Buccaneers were fighting tooth and nail to stay in the game they simply looked lack luster next to the fired up Storm.

However the game took on a different flavour when Buccaneer Fly Half and former Iguana, Sean Murphy took the field in the 2nd half. Murphy has caused defensive lines many a headache all season with his blistering change of pace and fantastic handling skills and the Buccaneers were quickly back in the game but it was too little too late. The game ended 30-11 in favour of the Storm and Keswick Wright proudly lifted both the Alex Alexander Cup and the Waterford Vase for the season, although Wright hadn’t managed to score on the day and reach his personal goal of 30 tries, nothing was going to wipe the smile of his face or pry the trophies from his hands for that matter

When asked about his team’s performance on the day Buccaneer Captian Mick Kehoe was gracious in defeat... “We didn't  make any major mistakes but  when we had the pressure on them in the second half Bluey's kicking took them out of danger every time... missing our Fly half Sean Murphy through injury in the first half had a large impact on our game also... Congragulations to Keswick and his Storm team on a very successful season, well done but watch out next year we will be looking to take back the AA cup and the Waterford Trophy.”

If this year was anything to go by then there should definately be some exciting rugby to come next year!

The Brightstaff Recruitment Club Alex Alexander Memorial Cup and Waterford Vase are the national open grade tournaments for the five club sides within the Cayman Islands, the BPC Buccaneers, the Don Fosters Dive Iguanas, the Queensgate Pigs Trotters, The Cayman surge and the DHL Cayman Storm.

The Alex Alexander competition was the idea of past captain Duanne Bodden who thought that the Union needed a better and more structured series of matches other than simply relying on incoming tour matches. The tournament is played in the memory of Alex who sadly passed away some years ago.

The AA matches have now developed into two tournaments the League championship and the knock out shield.

The League championship is a double round robin among all of the sides and the team that finishes on top of the league at the end of the season is the Waterford AA Cup Champion.

The Waterford Knock out Vase is a knoack out tournament played after the Waterford AA League has been completed. Round 1 sees the 1st placed team play the 4th placed team and round 2 sees the 2nd placed team play the 3rd placed team. The fifth placed team is automatically eliminated. The final is between the winners of round 1 and round 2.

As we look forward to the addition of the fifth club side to the AA Cup in 2007 the Knock out Cup will take on a whole new urgency for teams at the bottom of the table as only four will make the play off. I am sure Alex would approve.

The Brightstaff Recruitment kindly offered to sponsor the Alex Alexander Championships in 2006 and their inclusion into the Union has added a completely new feel to the competition and as all things the Brighstaff is involved with a professionalism that is un-surmounted.
